Once a booming industrial center with more millionaires per capita than any other American city, Watertown, New York began losing residents and businesses in the mid-60s. Like other ‘left behind’ communities in rural America, ensuing workforce and infrastructure challenges have been exacerbated by high rates of substance use.

People the world over feel compelled to help others overcome the same challenges they’ve overcome. That impulse seems especially powerful in the recovery community. One good example is Leon Richardson who rehabbed the first time at 17 and nearly three decades later became a resident at a Piedmont Recovery Residence in Martinsville, Virginia that he now oversees as Program Manager.

Never Alone Recovery Support Services on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Pablo, Montana stands out in many ways. New Foundations, a nonprofit transitional housing provider with 11 facilities serving rural communities in Ohio and Kentucky, provides fully furnished move-in-ready sober living options for those in recovery. Known for its size, level of support, and emphasis on accountability, New Foundations nevertheless needed help.

“We were overwhelmed,” says Fay Russom, Executive Director of Hardin County Jesus Cares, a Savannah, Tennessee nonprofit dedicated to helping rural families in crisis. “We’ve always had a heart for people who are homeless and had been wanting to provide recovery housing for years, but none of us had any experience.

Restoring Roots

Founded in Wisconsin by families who have a loved one with an addiction, Restoring Roots knew what it wanted: Long-term treatment in a self-sustaining environment where those in recovery could nurture the skills needed for lasting abstinence and meaningful employment. The problem: Plenty of naysayers, but no model to follow.

Entrepreneurial training sponsored in part by the Fletcher Group has helped residents of five Eastern Kentucky recovery centers find a new sense of self-worth and purpose by providing them with the skills and resources to start their own businesses.

WICAP in Idaho

Led by the Western Idaho Community Action Partnership, a task force of rural healthcare providers and non-profits in Payette, Idaho is taking the first steps toward developing recovery housing for the homeless and addicted in southwest Idaho. “The Fletcher group has been extremely helpful,” says WICAP Executive Director Heidi Caldwell.

“Isolation is the enemy, community is the answer,” says Don Roberts. “That’s why I’m so emotional about the way our community has come together. Six years ago we had nothing here but AA. Now, in addition to lots of great programs, we have the most crucial piece: a safe, sober living space where people can develop the skills to meet life on its own terms.”

Under the leadership of Executive Director Jay Phillips, Seed Sower, Inc. provides safe and supervised housing, transportation, and recovery support services to adult women in southern West Virginia who are in active recovery from a Substance Use Disorder.
