Role of Recovery Allies

Alison Webb is a recovery coach, public health specialist, and certified prevention specialist who’s worked over 15 years in the field of substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery. In this course she addresses the age-old question of What Can I Do? No matter who’s asking — friend, family, neighbor, or community member — it’s good to have an answer that will stand the test of time. Alison discusses how you can serve as an ally to support recovery, recovery housing, and other supportive services that build recovery capital. As Alison says, “Most adults with substance use disorder don’t receive specialized treatment like counseling, medication, or rehab. Instead, the recovery journey starts in their communities, among family and friends, here and now, with their recovery allies.”

Implementing Medication Assisted Recovery

In this course, we'll cover changes in the illicit drug supply and how these changes are impacting trends in overdoses and deaths. We'll discuss how to create a plan to support safe use of life-saving addiction medications in recovery homes, minimizing the risk of diversion. We also outline strategies to help you evaluate options for working with different kinds of healthcare providers that can work with you to streamline your residents' access to addiction treatment medications. We'll introduce a resource you can use to evaluate your best options in providing mutual support curricula and peer support groups that don't stigmatize medications for addiction. We'll help you to create policies and procedures to safely and manage FDA-approved addiction medications on-site, with special attention to the Department of Justice guidance on the Americans with Disabilities Act that assures access to medications for treating opioid use disorder. Finally, we'll review compliance concerns with this act and the Fair Housing Act, sharing case scenarios and additional information.

Urine Analysis (UA) Best Practices

Recovery homes may use urine analysis for their residents centered on supporting each person's recovery journey. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), urine testing is the best developed and most commonly used monitoring technique in recovery programs. Understanding Urine Analysis - Urine analysis is the best-developed and most-used monitoring technique in substance use treatment programs across the continuum of care. When used correctly and competently following best practice guidelines, it can be an effective therapeutic tool. Drug testing uses a biological sample to detect the presence or absence of a specific drug (or drugs) and drug metabolites within a specific window of time. No universal standard exists today in clinical drug testing for addiction identification, diagnosis, treatment, medication monitoring, or recovery. Urine Analysis: From a Resident Perspective - This course will explain urine analysis from the residents perspective. Providing person-first care, dignity, and respect is hugely important to your residents. This course explains how urine analysis can affect the resident.
